In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Since there are many Arabic terms used in the explanation of the Quran, islamic conversations, books, videos and websites about islam, I thought it was quite useful to make a page with the most used terms that might come in handy someday.
Adhan - call to salat
Akhirah - hereafter, eternal life
Alamin - worlds, mankind, jinn and angels
Alayhi as-salaam (as, pbuh) - peace be upon him (used after naming a prophet or a noble angel)
Alhamdullilah - praise be to Allah
Allahumma - O Allah
Allahu Akbar - Allah is the Greatest
Amanah - the trust
Amin - Amen
As-salamu alaikum - peace be upon you, islamic greeting
Astaghfirullah - I seek forgiveness from Allah
A'udhu billah - I seek refuge in Allah
Awrah - the parts of the body that must be covered in front of others (excluding the spouse)
Ayah - a sign, verse from the Quran
Barakah - a form of blessing
Barak Allahu fikum - may Allah bless you, a form of thanks
Bismillah - in the name of Allah
Dahri - atheist
Da'wah - call to Islam
Dhikr - remembrance of Allah
Dhuhr - second daily prayer
Din - religion, islamic way of life
Du'a - personal prayer, supplication
Dunya - this world, the physical universe
Eid - feast
Eid al Adha - the festival of sacrifice
Eid al Fitr - the end of Ramadan, festival of breaking fast
Fajr - first daily prayer, morning
Fard - religious duty, obligatory
Ghusl - full ablution of the body
Hadith - recorded saying/tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
Hafiz - memorizer of the Quran
Hajj - pilgrimage to Makkah
Halal - permitted, lawful, good
Haram - sinful
Hijab - the covering of the body, modest behaviour
Ibadah - submission, worship, servitude to Allah
Iblis - Satan
Iftar - the meal eaten during Ramadan to break fast after sunset
Ilah - deity, a god
Imam - leader, leader of prayer or a community
Iman - personal faith
Inna lilahi wa inna 'ilaihi raji'un - To Allah we belong and to Him is our return, said to mourners
Insha'Allah - God willing, if Allah wills
Isa - Jesus
Isha - fifth daily prayer
Istighfar - requesting forgiveness
Jahannam - Hellfire
Jannah - Paradise, Heaven
Jihad - struggle
Jinn - invisible being made of fire
Jumu'ah - the friday prayer
Ka'bah - the cube in Makkah toward which muslims pray
Khair - every kind of good
Kufr - infidelity, disbelief, blasphemy
La illaha illa-llah - there is no ilah other than Allah
Laylat al-Qadr - the night of Power, towards the end of the month Ramadan
Maghrib - fourth daily prayer
Mahram - a relative within the protective limits
Makruh - detested, not haram but disliked
Mala'ika - Angels
Masha'Allah - Allah has willed it
Masdjid - mosque, place of prayer
Masdjid al-Haram - the mosque in Makkah surrounding the Ka'bah
Muhammadun rasullulah - Mohammed is the messenger of Allah
Mushrik - a polytheist
Nabi - Prophet
Nikah - matrimonial contract in islamic marriage
Niqab - veil covering the face
Nur - Light
Qiblah - the direction Muslims face duringpray
Qiyamah - resurrection
Rak'ah - a unit of salat
Ramadan - a month of fasting, when the Quran was first revealed
Rasul - messenger, a prophet that was given a scripture
Sabr - patience, self restraint
Sadaqah - voluntary charity
Salat - prayer, any of the five obligatory prayers in islam
Salam - peace
Sallalahu alayhi wa salam (saw) - may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said after mentioning Prophet Muhammad's name
Sawm - fasting during the month of Ramadan
Shahadah - the testimony of faith
Shari'ah - the eternal ethical and moral code of islam
Shaytan - Satan, the Devil
Shirk - idolatry, polytheism
Subhana wa ta'ala (swt) - highly praised and glorified is he, used after writing or saying the name of Allah (swt)
Subhan'Allah - glory be to Allah, used when praising Allah or his creation
Suhur - the meal eaten just before dawn by fasting Muslims
Sunnah - the path of the Prophet, following the path of the Prophet
Surah - a chapter of the Quran
Tajweed - reciting the Quran according to the prescribed rules of pronunciation and intonation
Tarawih - extra nightly prayers during the month of Ramadan
Tasbih - saying Subhan'Allah
Tawbah - repentance
Ummah - the global community of believers
Umrah - the lesser pilgrimage
Wali - friend, protector, guardian
Wudu - ablution before salat
Ya Allah - O Allah
Yarhamuk-Allah - may Allah have mercy on you, said when someone sneezes
Yawm al Qiyamah - Day of Judgement
Zakat - tax as a Muslim duty
