In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Last week I had a conversation about Islam with a friend of mine. He told me about something he talked about with someone he met at the train station. About how that someone thought religion was something invented for making money off of.
When you think about it, in a way it does make sense. Why else is it possible that during the Middle Ages in Europe so many people were dying from poverty while the Church had all the money they could dream of. Money they used to build churches, to hold crusades, to maintain and support the wealth of their emissaries.
But then again, not all religions are equal. Not all people that follow a certain religion are equal. Some people might still view religion as a way to make money, a way to achieve wealth in this world, while others see it as the only thing that can rescue them from the Hellfire. Both groups exist and must live together on this world. The way I see it, this is yet another part of the tests the life in this world exists out of. There are always people that have gone astray so far that they are not capable of seeing the Truth, even if it is right in front of them. This phenomenon is explained in surah Al-An'am, the 6th surah of the Quran. I will talk more about this in another post.
The fact that people say religion is invented to make money off of is not a complete lie. Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) has sent His word down upon Mankind several times. Proof of this can be found in the Qur'an.
42:13 The same religion has He established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah ... and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The first time His word was sent down to Mankind was the Taurat, this however got corrupted and has turned into the Torah of today.
The second time was with the Zabur, this got corrupted as well and is what we now know as the Book of Psalms.
The third time there was made a Revelation to Jesus ('alayhi as-salaam), which got corrupted as well and is now part of the New Testament.
29:46 But say, "We (Muslims) believe in the Revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you (Jews and Christians); our Allah and your Allah is One".As stated in the quote above, the God spoken of in the Qur'an and in the scriptures of the Jews and Christians is indeed the same. Their religion simply got corrupted, partly because people saw it as an opportunity to make some money. Again, this does not mean that all people that believe are corrupted, neither that all people that believe in a certain religion are corrupted. This only shows that in this world there are believers and disbelievers, and we must be careful because these disbelievers may lead us astray.
